WKC racers ready for six weekends at four awesome tracks in 2022

Woodbridge Kart Club will continue a partnership with the American Kart Racing Association (AKRA) and the Ohio-based Dart Kart Club in 2022 to bring members one of our most aggressive and versatile race schedules in many years.

The latest WKC schedule includes six race weekends at four outstanding race tracks. Four of these events are hosted and promoted by WKC, while the other two events — Mid-Ohio and Pittsburgh — are hosted and promoted by Dart Kart and will count toward WKC year-end point standings and awards. All six races are sanctioned by AKRA and four of the six are AKRA National Road Race Series events.

As has been the case for the last several seasons, WKC’s four race weekends will all take place at Summit Point Motorsports Park in Summit Point, W. Va.

We’re thrilled Summit Point has invited our club back to their thriving road-racing motorsports venue in 2022. The multi-purpose complex, located in West Virginia’s eastern panhandle about 70 northwest of Washington, D.C., has been in operation since 1969, includes three race different race courses and plays host to over 40 organizations annually; WKC is proud to remain one of those organizations and hold events annually at Summit Point since the early years of the venue.

The 2022 series will open with a two-day regional event April 15-16 at Summit’s Shenandoah Circuit. The circuit, just over two miles in length, is one of the most challenging tracks in road race karting and is commonly referred to as an “overgrown sprint track” including several tight hairpins, esses, chicanes, sweeping corners and high-speed straightaways. This is a great event for first-time racers to give the sport and road-race style of karting a try.

About a month after the opener WKC will host the opening round of the 2022 AKRA national series, set for May 20-22 at Summit’s 2.0-mile Main Circuit. This race attracted over 400 race entries this past May and we’re expecting another great crowd in 2022. The event will include the Animal Nationals for Briggs Animal-powered sprint-enduro karts with a $4,000 guaranteed purse plus contingency awards, and a post-race bash will take place Saturday evening with a catered pig roast, raffles and door prizes.

Last year this race was a two-day show and we’re pleased to announce that the 2022 version will be a three-day event with a full day of Friday practice before morning practice and racing Saturday and Sunday. In 2021, dozens of teams made long trips to Summit from all over the country to join the WKC regulars and we’re hoping with the addition of Friday practice and other incentives even more racers will participate this May.

The third month of the season has WKC taking part in what’s been the biggest national road race in the country the last couple years, the Mid-Ohio Nationals at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The Dart Kart Club-hosted event, set for June 17-19, attracted over 300 drivers and 900-plus race entries in 2021 and there’s no reason to think the 2022 version will be any smaller.

Mid-Ohio has long been one of the greatest road courses in the country and karts race at the track only once a year. Classes such as 125 Shifter, Yamaha (laydown enduro) Pipe, CIK LO206 and others annually start fields greater than 30 and 40 karts, and WKC is pleased to offer our members Mid-Ohio as a points race for the first time.

Following Mid-Ohio it’ll be back home to Summit Point July 9-10 for the second WKC regional of the year at the Shenandoah Circuit. Similar to April, this will be a two-day event (no Friday practice).

WKC hosts our second AKRA national of the year August 20-21 at Summit’s Main Circuit. The August Summit race will be our fifth round of the season as well as AKRA’s fifth round, and it will be a two-day show (no Friday practice).

For the sixth and final round of 2022, WKC will rejoin Dart Kart and AKRA Sept. 23-25 for the only kart race of the year at Pittsburgh International Race Complex’s 2.8-mile Full Course. The Pittsburgh Nationals continues to grow and it has become a marquee  annual event for road race karters over the past five years. Over 850 race entries took part in September 2021 with many WKC regulars in attendance and challenging for wins.

Dates for the six-race series couldn’t fall any better with four-to-five weeks in between each race from mid April through late September. Geographically, Mid-Ohio is about 380 miles west of Summit Point or about a six-hour drive. Pittsburgh Int’l is located about 240 miles west of Summit or about a four-hour drive.

Everyone at WKC is looking forward to a great 2022 racing season and we’re inviting all karters out to join us!
